WINDSOR secondary’s
loss is the University of
British Columbia’s
gain.

Dukes’ coach Jay
Prepchuk was hired as the
Thunderbirds’ new head
coach April 23, replacing
Dave Johnson.

“We're confident Jay is
going to do a great job for
us,” UBC athletic director
Bob Philip said in a news
release.

“He’s been effective at the
high school level and is ready
to make the move to universi-
ty football.”

Prepchuk coached 11] years
at Windsor, guiding the team
to three provincial AA cham-
pionships in the last four sea-
sons.

Johnson resigned in March
amid allegations that he phys-
ically assaulted an assistant
coach, University of B.C.
RCMP have recommended to
Crown counsel that Johnson
be charged with assault.

Under Johnson, the T-
Birds went 7-3 in 1998. He
was pressed into the position
after Casey Smith was diag-
nosed with cancer. Smith,
who guided UBC te the 1997
Vanier Cup uational champi-
onship, died of cancer last

dozen passing records and was

1980 Shrum Bowl Classic
