Chapel fumes not propane, Says doctor Robert Galster News Reporter robert@nsnews.com SEVERAL memorial ' service guests are having a hard time putting their Boal Chapel expe- ience behind them. In the hours following the April 4 mid-morning, service, 17 of the 35 guests attending ended up in hospital. Some of the guests complained of nau- sea, headaches and in two cases loss of consciousness. Although fire department officials initially believed the guests were overcome by propane, a Lions Gate Hospital emergency doctor. diagnosed carbon monoxide poisoning. “Ir (carbon monoxide) blocks the body's ability to sup- ply the oxygen to the body, particularly the brain,” said Dr. David Watson. “It’s only. a major problem if people. are sleeping ... and don’t wake up.” Watson said all of the vic- tims were released the same day. “The source of the guests’ discomfort was likely a propane space heater brought. into the facility after a problem with the _building’s regular heating sys- rem. But ube facility’s staff is still perplexed and an internal investigation is ongoing. NEWS photo Cindy Goodman A service for Ken Reid’s mother turned into a nightmare when guests attending North Vancouver's Boal Chapel began to feel sick, with half ending up in hospital. “The heater was used previ- ously and there was no prob- lem,” said Guy Reid, general manager of First Memorial Funeral Services which runs Boal Chapel. Reid said electrical heat has been installed at the chapel since the incident and will be used until a planned 160-seat facility is constructed in the fall. Bur Judy Carlson, whose mother-in-law was the focus of the service, said explanations forwarded to her to date are unacceptable. “I think everybody in the family expects some sort of compensation,” said Carlson. “At least some sort of an apol- ogy would be nice.” Carlson’s husband Ken Reid agrees with his wife's assessment, adding he has con- tacted a lawyer to look into the matter. “Pm still furning about it a bit,” said Reid. “We've had no forme! apology trom Boal, not a damn thing. I°s1 nor going to let a thing like this pass.” Boal Chapel’s Reid said he has been unable to reach all of the gacses attending the service and thus is unable to apologize for their discomfort.
