(Elderly Notation [e.n.]: the Chalet's
Kid’s menu covers children 10 and
under; it has five items, four of
which are $3.95, the other is $2.95;

the price includes a beverage, choice -

of fries, salad cr coleslaw, and a.-
small sundae dessert);

you ask your server (e.n.: Chalet’
concoction of pop spiked with grena-
dine; no fruit juice added);

“Excellent — a free scoop in the
toy chest (e.n.; plastic figurines,
stickers, plastic skip ropes and
assorted five and dime trinkets);

“Boo, no TVs Dad ... Dad?”

Yes. Right. Got it. The Swiss

connection. According to the restau-
rant’s menu intro, the Chalet has
been famous for its “unique rotis-
serie barbecued chicken” since 1954,
avery good year, I might add, for the
birth of other ramous things and per-
sonalities.

CHICKEN TONIGHT? ... If 0, the new Swiss Chalet in North
Yancouver beckons with chicken plates like the one pictured

here.

The recipe, it says here, originat-
ed in Switzerland and decrees that
the chicken used shall always be
fresh, NEVER FROZEN. Said fowl
is then cooked in a brick-lined oven
that ensures the chicken bastes in its
own juices and is always golden on
the outside and tender and juicy on
the inside.

Is that Swiss enough for you?

- Sort of.

OK, so don’t be disappointed if
you encounter no Alpine yodeling,
Swiss-style yogurt, fondue selections
or raclettes at the Swiss Chalet. You
also won’t encounter any elevated
Swiss-style prices.

The Swiss Chalet is all about
plain dining at plain prices.

It is chicken ($5.50 to $8.35) pre-

sented rotiss serie-style, charbroiled, in
strips, in wings, in pot pies and atop
salads; it is ribs ($6.45 to $11.95)
side or back presented with barbecue
sauce, with baked potatoes, rice or
salad; it is sandwiches and a burger
($5.35 and $5.50); and it is even
shrimp ($7.95 and $11.55) presented
Creole style or herb and garlic style.

It is not interesting or subtle, but
Swiss Chalet food appeals to a lot of
people.

The chain spreads the length and
breadth of Canada and has outlets in
New York and Florida. Its numbers
are impressive. From a cursory initial
scan of the Chalet’s menu, close to
80 outlets.
