Ballard Battery Systems Corp.. a developer and manufacturer of advanced, high-energy — primary lithium batteries, recently secured a contract: with the United States military that is expected to yield sales of between $30 million and $80 million from five different battery models over the next five years. With a repayable contribution of $303,000 from the federal gov- ernment’s Western Diversification Fund, Ballard plans to develop three new battery models for the U.S. Army to be used in infra-red viewers, chemical masks and digital message devices. At the same time, the company will attempt to reduce the manufacturing costs of several of its battery units, The cost of both projects is estimated at $723,856. “The federal support will help Ballard Battery enhance its leading-edge position in the inter- national market place and further develop its world-class techno- logy,"* said Capilano-Howe Sound MP and Associate Minister of Na- tional Defence Mary Collins. Ballard Battery president Avraham Elarar said Western Diversification support is helping the company to develop new pro- ducts while stepping up and im- proving production of its five ex- isting batteries. Ballard Battery is a subsidiary of Ballard Power Systems of North Vancouver.
