MAILBOX Facelift on bridge is disappointing Open letter to West Vancouver Mayor Mark Sager: As a resident of West Van- couver iar the past 12 years, I feel obliged te voice my feclings on the recent reconstruction of the bridge over the stream on Es- quimalt Avenue at 18th Street, West Vancouver. Understanding that repairs were necessary, | gladly diverted my daily walk to work during the repair period. Words cannot describe my feelings when I took my familiar route to work one morning and found that a flat grey concrete bridge with wire mesh now took its place, the charming picturesque ravine, the trees and wooden bridge, gone forever. To take away such beauty is to destroy West Vancouver. A part of my soul is mourning the loss of something which had become a part of my daily life, for | would stand on that bridge under the trees each morning and thank God for such beauty. Do not tell me that the planners of our municipality have allowed their souls to be destroyed for the sake of ‘short-cuts’ and lack of imagination, or have our monies already been spent on brickwalks and fancy standard street lamps at the cost of natural beauty spots? I request an explanation for the destruction of one of the natural beauty spots of West Vancouver. Elizabeth M. Phillips West Vancouver Office tower lights don’t waste energy Dear Editor: Shirley Stone’s letter to the edi- tor in the Feb. 6 issuc of the News complains about the energy being wasted by downtown office towers with their lights blazing 24 hours a ay. This complaint pops up regular- ly, but it seems that there are plenty of folks who never hear the explanation. Modern building air condition- ing systems are desigtied to take into account the heat energy created by lights in the building. If the lights are turned out then the heating system has to replace the lost energy by burning more gas, oil or electricity with no significant saving in energy. You can bet that if there were savings, building owners would turn off the lights to improve their bottom line. I would rather enjoy the beautiful downtown light display than have everything in darkness with virtually no saving in energy. Long may the lights burn. Edward White North Vancouver Crist off the mark on autos Dear Editor: Alderman Ernie Crist was elected to serve the people of the District of North Vancouver, so | do wish he would not waste his time telling the mayor of West Vancouver what to do. Mr. Crist is simply another pol- itician who publicly champions the environmental cause to increase his vote count. However, let me advise Mr. Crist that, for a variety of reasons, cars will be with us for a long time and probably in ever increasing numbers. If new road construction is not carried out, then there will be two main results: Long vehicular line-ups will increase pollution; and those who dwell on the North Shore will simply move away to areas of better road transporta- tion, thus decreasing the employ- ment and jobs here, fs this what Mr. Crist wants?
