Kiwanis wine fest heid

THE FIRST shipment of Beau-
jolais Nouveau from France will be
uncorked Friday at this year's in-
stalment of the Kiwanis Interna-
tional Wine Festival.

The event takes place 4:30 p.m.
to 9:30 p.m. at the Vancouver
Trade and Convention Centre.

The Beaujolais will be offered
for sampling along with Nouveau
wines from Italy, the U.S. and
B.C. More than $1,000 worth of
assorted wine brands, vintages and
types will be raffled off.

Gordon Ritchie will show how
to open a bottle of champagne by
slashing the top off a bottle
with a sabre.

For the serious wine lover, the
festival provides an opportunity to
sample a vast assortment of expen-
sive wines without committing
yourself to an entire bottle.
Members of the Import Vinters
Association will be on hand with
their experts to answer questions
about all wines they offer for
sampling.

Approximately !80 different
brands, including some not avail-
able in retail outlets will be avail-
able for purchase.

gets support

NORTH VANCOUVER City
Council voted Monday to support
the establishment of a new North
Shore youth commission.

The city had originally consid-
ered setting up a youth task force
to identify and tackle the causes of
the city drug trafficking problem.

The larger-scale commission will
include representation from the
broader community.
