pools, especially kids.

Whatever the size or type,
swimming pools are great places to
relax, socialize, have fun, cool off
and get some exercise. ‘But ina
matter of seconds, that fun can
turn to tragedy.

The death of a child by drown-
ing in a backyard pool is par-
ticularly tragic because it is
preventable. The alarming number
of pool-related deaths last year
prompted the Red Cross to make
this one of the focal points of their
Water Safety campaigns, Supervi-
sion Saves Lives.

It only takes a few seconds for a
child to get into danger in the
water.

Youngsters need supervision
even if they are competent swim-
mers. Children are capable of the

Pool owners should establish
pool rules for safe enjoyment of
their pool:

© Supervise all users of the pool.
Close the pool when supervision is
not available.

@ Mark water depths cicarly.
One out of three diving accidents
happen in backyard pools. Eo-
courage and supervise the use of
safe pool games and equipment.

* Alcohol and pool activities do
‘not mix. Judgment becomes
paired, leading people to try things
they normally would not.
