Seasonal tune-up is a money saver

WITH EVER-INCREASING costs
of gasoline and upkeep, many
people are tempted to cut expenses

by putting off routine automobile |

check-ups and non-emergency
repairs.

Forty per cent of all Canadians
normally neglect even the most
basic vehicle maintenance. If you
belong to this group, says the B.C.
Automobile Association, this arti-
cle is meant for you.

coast until something breaks
down,

What you may not realize is that
this could end up costing you
much more than the price of a
regular tune-up, advises the auto
club. Your vehicle will be safer,
achieve better gas mileage, have
more power and cause less pollu-
tion if you maintain it regularly.

Neglect any part of that intricate
engine systern, and it will not only

damage several other components
at the same time.

Here are some things BCAA
suggests you should undertake on
your own before you book an ap-
pointment for a tune-up.

Check the battery fluid levels
and the drive belt tension. Press
down in the middle with your
thumb. It shouldn’t give more than
an inch.

Change the oil if it hasn’t been
changed for several months. If you
have been using single weight oil as

recommended by your owner's
manual, change to summer grade.

If the battery terminals appear
to be encrusted, clean them with a
wire brush.

Befcre you book an appoint-
ment for a spring tune-up, take
your vehicle out for a Sunday drive
and watch for driving irregularities
Or noises to call to the mechanic’s
attention, advises the auto club. If
the brake warning light on the
dashboard comes on and stays on,

or if you hear a grinding noise
coming from one of the wheels
when you stop, get the brakes
checked immediately.

A faulty or leaking oil sea! could
cause your rear wheels to lock
when the brakes are only lightly
applied and should also be
repaired immediately. Watch for
a constant pull to one side when
you stop - perhaps the wheels are
out of alignment or a brake is
malfunctioning.
