bounty of which I speak, as it relates to color in the flower
beds this summer, is best planned for in January.

The seeds of some annual and
most perennial flowering plants,
which are expected to produce a
reasonable display of color this
year, should be sown indoors in
January,

Some of the more common an-
nuals which would be considered
good candidates for starting carly
are as follows:

Calceolaria is a tender perennial
which we can use as an annual in
areas of bright shade or a few
hours of early morning or late
afternoon sun. Its cascading
tendencies make it a good subject
for hanging baskets or window
boxes in shade. Bright yellow
hybrids are highly sought after to
add a flash of light to fuschia and
begonia plantings.

cineraria) could be said to be the

reliable old Bud Abbot of the
garden; never stepping out into the
limelight, just making the clownish
Lou Costello-like red geraniums
and red salvia look good. In other
words its silver-grey foliage makes
a perfect background for the sunny
beds of reds, deep blues, and deep

purples.

Dwarf dahlias (dahlia pinnata
‘Unwins Dwarf’, ‘Redskin’, etc.)
can make an outstanding show in a
sunny position throughout the
summer when started early,

The wax begonias (begonia
semperflorens) are rather difficult
to get started. And yet, their ver-
satility with regards to the amount
of sun or shade they can withstand
