EVERY FIVE years or so,
and whether it needs it or
not, I clean out my desk.

Sometimes I surprise myself
with stuff I wrote years ago and
never got around to publishing.

In fact, when | found this, I had
no intention of using it in the col-
umn. Re-reading it, | decided that
I'd re-type it and give it to my
friend, Sharon, who has a son,
George, in Europe. He doesn’t
write as often as she'd like.

My family read it and insisted I
share it. .

So, for Sharon and any of the
rest of you who have kids floating
around the world:

We missed you on the day you left;

Your sister met a nice young guy,
He’s really quite a pet.

He likes your tapes and you'll get
paid,

But he’s not working yet.

We loaned your room to Uncle Ed,
Looks like he’s here to stay.

He re-arranged your furniture,
And gave a lot away.

The Sally Ann took all your junk,
Including all those books.

It took three men to lug them out;
They gave me funny looks.

Your brother made the soccer
team.

He’s wearing your old sweater.
The coach is really keen on him.
He said, ‘‘Your're good. Joe’s bet-
ter.’’

Your girlfriend dropped-in yester-
day

And said she’s found another.
Imagine our surprise, my son,
She’s going with your brother.

Aunt Elsie sends her very best.
She'd like to hear from ‘‘Sonny”’.
How come you didn’t tell us, dear,
She’d loaned you all that money?

So, if you get a chance to write
I! tell you all the news.

Dad’s quit his job, but don’t you
fret!

He’s paid the golf club dues.

It’s very boring here at home.
Nothing seems to matter.

1 know you're having quite a
time.

Now where the hell’s that letter?

Even though the Poet Laureate
botched the Fergie-Andrew bit, I
am resisting all urging to apply for
the job.
