As one of the horde of journalists who has been try- ing to keep an eye ‘firmly fixed on the Expo drama — it IS by nature ‘‘historic’? — I have been aware from the Start that the power struggles in the board room of this particular Crown corpora- tion were bloody, by any standards. It- was hard to get a fix on a lot of Expo stories for the precise reason that the guy who was assisting you was liable-to disappear any day, usually to be replaced by nobody in particular. 1 happen to think World's Fairs actually do contribute something to their era. This one in particular offers a glimpse of a possible terrific future. The leaking dome isn’t his fault, by. the way. 1 happen to know that it was Michael Bartlett who shaved the budget by insisting the waterproofing be done the cheap way. ; Given a belief in the potential usefulness of the project. _ Jimmy Pattison and he has impressed me deeply with his ff charismatic belief in his abil- ity to deliver. It ‘has therefore been disappointing as the clock ticks inexorably toward opening day, to see all that blood on the corporate decks. | would expect it’s going to be a non-stop bloodbath from here on in, f Free Initlal awe 7 & fee estimate . : Goluboff Mazzet & >» Schmidt —— -#201-585 16th St. West Vancouver Expo - incidentally, because a lot of very troublesome questions have been raised that won’t go away. Expo just might yet turn out to be the Titanic bearing the Social Credit Party down into an icy electoral sea, unless it can somehow get its bow up out of the waves. Yhe leaking dome stands a 50-50 chance, I would say, of becoming the unfortunate symbol of calamity. In a nutshell, here’s the major problem that has broken tike a grey Atlantic roHer over the wheelhouse: Jimmy Pattison should have kept his own companies out of the bidding on Expo con- tracts. In his defence, Pattison says he’s saving the tax- payers money by having his companies tender low bids for Expo work. I don’t see that. If a contract goes to him for $5,000, say, beating out a company that bid $7,000, the taxpayer may, indeed, save $2,000, but $5,000 will still go into. So call Shaw Cable, and get Dad TSN. it’s a gift else's. No matter how Pattison sees it, the fact remains that Jimmy is the sole shareholder of his con- glomerate. It is himself, personally, who is profiting from any deals one of his companies makes with Expo, whether they underbid or not. Also, since the companies within his Group do business with each other at every opportu- nity, minimizing each other's costs, Pattison can afford to underbid smaller, indepen- dent outfits in any event. | can’: see that he's taking a loss. This, not Michael Bartlett’s osteniatiousness, is the root problem at Expo at the moment. There is a huge amount of bitterness out there among local businessmen which the sacrificial beheading of Michael Bartlett won't do much to alfeviate. The pro- blem with the $3 billion Jimmy Pattison says will be pumped through B.C.’s economy thanks to Expo is that rather more of it than should be the case is filtering enroute through companies belonging to the Pattison Group.
