Oh to be in England with jet-lag and bombs

buses and on trains. The
urge to translate items like
“orig. pt cst! Hen 8” before
my mind went blank was
pressing, especially since
we'll be heading off again

After a lapse of several
years, Heathrow Airport had
quite a welcome for us. As
we stood in the aisles waiting
to get off the plane, the P.A.
system advised us. “Please
return to your. seats.
Heathrow Airport has been
evacuated due to a bomb
threat.” We glumbly shoved
our stiff backsides into seats
while I mentally calculated
the amount of fuel remaining
in the aircraft and its near
neighbors. We'd sure make a
helluva roar if that threat
wasn't a hoax! At last I
appreciated a positive side of
jet lag — not one sign of
panic appeared among
several hundred passengers.
Or are Canadians natural op-
timists?

Soon we were guided to a
“clean” room in the airport
under the care of radio-
equipped officials. There I
got lucky and met a fellow
passenger Pete Wise who is
head of airport operations
for Sea-Tac Airport in
Washington State. An in-
teresting side-light — Pete
and his wife chose to drive
all the way to Vancouver to
fly Air Canada because he
preferred our costs and
facilities. I asked him about
his experiences with bomb
threats at Sea-Tac. Very
reasSuring.

wrong bus, leaving us double
the cab fare at the end.
Never mind, the ride in a red
double-decker was a plea-
Sant reunion and we rode the
top deck which is where
smoking is permitted. 2.50

Baggage is no problem,
there’s a rack right behind
the driver. Someone heaved
ours aboard.

Our ride took us through
Chiswick, which Ill swear is
the London suburb used as a
model for R.F. Delderfield
in his “Avenue” novels, and

How I love Britain! Every
time I ride from the airport
to the city I want to stop the
bus and potter through the
grass to make friends with a
fat cat in a window or a big
cow in a postage-stamp field.

Every time I take a long
flight through many time
zones I'm delighted when my

own advice works. Take a
walk, take a brief nap, take
another walk with a light
meal and GO TO BED for

your regulation sleep. When
you face the next day, you'll
be on foreign time. Trust
me.
