When Bob Styan powered down Whistler last
year in the World Cup event to finish in the top

~one of the-biggest cheers came

from his old club, the Grouse Mountain Tyees.

The Tyee program is a
non-profit organization
dedicated to the promotion
and development of skiing in
the lower mainland.

They have been operating
for a number of years and
the Grouse Mountain bunch
were more than just a bit
proud at the exploits of
Styan.

Both Styan and another
Grouse alumnus, Bergie
Lund will be members of the
national team this season.

But the club does far more
than just develop one or two
top racers. They are geared
to provide instruction and
fun for both the recreation
and competitive young skier.

Under the guidance of
head coach Michel Beaudry,
the Grouse group takes part
in a season long racing
circuit.

The Tyees are represented
on the B.C. ski team by
Wade Christie and Scott
Wolley while the two top age
group racers in the lower

mainland, Eric Blomberg
and Roman Torn,
represented British

The club program is
divided into three sections.
For the under 13s, the Nancy
Greene program is a fun and
inexpensive introduction to
ski racing, with a racing
circuit involving clubs from
Seymour, Blackcomb and
Whistler. ;

A Bantam program is for
14 and 15 year olds who want
a less structured program
than the highly competitive
skier yet still learn more
about ski racing.

The Junior program is
intensive. In the fall there
are three months of dryland
training including long
distance running, bicycle
training, hill climbing and
weight workouts.

An winter they train five
times a week on snow witha
racing season that begins the
end of January and doesn't
finish until the end of April.

Two full time coaches and
eight assistants handle the
program which this year will
include racers taking part in
events all across Canada and
the United States.
