In no-area of life is the
above quotation more ap-
propriate than weight
control. It is so easy, when
overweight, to fall into the
trap of self-pity and self-
hate.

“I just can’t stand myself!”
is. the .often-heard cry of
those who are. striving to
shed unwanted pounds. But
if we do not like ourselves, if
we are ovefly self-critical
because of ‘our excess
weight, how can be-expect
others to like us? More
importantly, how can we
find the confidence it takes
to successfully lose that
weight? =

There are many reasons
for the lack of self-esteem
among overweight men and
women. The emphasis of our
media-oriented society on
physical appearance is one.
Every day we are bom-
barded with images of slim,
attractive models, en-
tertainers, actors and ac-

tresses.
reason that it is so difficult to
attain, we have come to
regard pencil-thinness.as a
virtue, and’ - advertisers
perpetuate this idea inorder
to persuade us:to try’ their
products, The ironic result.is
that even .the ‘normally at-
tractive person is left feeling
somehow lacking.’

But, of course, the world
as presented by this portion-
of the media is a fantasy

world. In the real one, there _

are young and.old, short and.
tall, attractive and plain
folk,‘ and not everyone is a
perfect size seven — no

Variety makes life .in-
teresting and many péople
are attractive and likable
even though not fitting the

word, either. A sunny,
outgoing (personality and
sense. of humor can draw
others to us as quickly as an
attractive facade can — and
keep them interested longer!

A sense of self-worth is
more important than ever as
we embark on a weight
control program. For if we
despise ourselves, if we feel
somehow we don't deserve
to succeed, if we expect to
fail, we will find it very
difficult to stay with our
program. To achieve suc-
cess, we must like ourselves
enough to believe we are
worthy of a slim future. We
must be a friend to ourselves
and do ourselves the im-
mense favor of making
sacrifices for our own long-
term benefit, just as we
would for our best friend.

It’s asking a lot of our-
selves to be supportive but,

-as the quotation says, if we

are not on our side, who else
will be? ,
