A8 - Sanday, April 25, 1982 - North Shore News EE mailb ge ee City should probe SPCA Dear Editor: If you and your children ever get the urge to adopt a cat or kitten or animal from the North Vancouver SPCA, please check with your banker and bank account first. When we were children, the SPCA were always around to see that animals were protected and cared for, and loved. The SPCA found homes for the animals that were less fortunate than ohers. True, some had to be put down but only after all ef- forts to place them in proper homes had failed. Not so at the Vancouver SPCA. My wife and I went on Saturday April 17, with the hope of getting a kitten for our 19-year-old daughter's birthday. We were informed at the SPCA that 3 kittens would be available for adoption in approx. 2 weeks, or, if we wanted to take mother and the three kittens, we could do so now. We _ thought North about it overnight and phoned the North Van SPCA on Sunday morning. No problem. We could have the mother cat and her three kittens. Happy days! Now for the kicker. In order for us to adopt the mother and three kittens it will cost us $30.00 for the mother cat, $24.00 for the male kittens and $30.00 for the female kittens. For my wife and I to adopt the mother and kittens the cost is over $100.00 Is this what we support the North Van SPCA for? What happens when the cat population ts in full swing in another month? Do the North Van SPCA give the cats and kittens to animal laboratories to ex- periment on if they aren't sold? The public should have the city look into how our SPCA in North Van its operated. The North Van SPCA is for the protection of animals, not for selling pets to the highest bidder. Mike and Shirley Andrews North Vancouver Pets ban brings much heartache Dear Editor: This is in answer to the recent letter in the Sunday News, Lonely Tenants crave Pets in Apartments. I] wonder how’ many people have suffered too deeply for words, having to give up a beloved pet just so they can obtain a roof over their heads! Yes. itis cruel, especially in a country where animals CREE ADULT & COMMUNITY ED are a part of our lives. Could not the landlords chide the few careless owners who help to cause criticism of the majonty of careful owners, causing heartache to so many. I sincerely hope landlords will have second thoughts about their indifference to people's feelings Gaile Vo Campbell West Vancouver 1 EDUCATION SERVICES NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICTS | You can earn Grade 12 at Night School within 2 months IF GENERAL EDUCATION DEVEL OPMENT -—» CLASSES (G.E-_D.) both DAY and EVENING You left school at Grade 107 You may have Grade 12 knowledge level! I fear they are ternbly wrong and shudder at the con- sequences should their message take root. Now that we have our own con- stitution, home at last, isn't it about time we had our own Head of State as well? A Canadian who resides tn Canada. Assuredly, this would give us the feeling of national pride and unity so sadly lacking in our country today. Particularly, at this crucial point in time, when threats of separation are not only heard from Quebec, but the Western Provinces as well, we need a symbol that ALL Canadians can relate to, more desperately than at any other time in our nations’ history. Our own Head of State would rekindle the spirit of national pride and patnotism felt so fervently when we finally flew our own Canadian flag. Canadians could identify with a Canadian Head of State (whose first and only interest would be Canada’s welfare) in a way that is simply not possible with the Bnitish Queen in England. D.C.
