MacPHERSON has always been the central force in California’s banking and investments, a state housing more people than in all of Canada. But when they turn the lights on, this is the fun city that three million tourists know best, a metro- polis not big by population figures, but a 47-square mile layout on 40 hills with more a elegance and charm than all others. As one blurb fromthe city’s tourist bureau puts it so succinctly: ‘‘Come to a city in. Ame*-a where you can eat in 26. languages, stroll through 10 countries in eight blocks, or take a roller-coaster ride - back to the 19th cen ”, John Steinbeck said of THE CITY: ‘‘You know what. it is? There’s verve and indivi- dualism in its 2,500 restuar- ants, bistros and the unique, but good-clean-fun piano bars, the latter being insti- tutions from Union Square to Fishermen’s Wharf. They draw their share nightly and are never a bore. Lefty O’Doul’s continues to flour- ish but to us, it isn’t the same without the extraverted base- ball great, who has left this scene. But the piano bar there is worth an hour’s stop.
