has always been the central
force in California’s banking
and investments, a state
housing more people than in
all of Canada. But when they
turn the lights on, this is the
fun city that three million
tourists know best, a metro-
polis not big by population
figures, but a 47-square mile
layout on 40 hills with more

elegance and charm than all

others.

As one blurb fromthe city’s
tourist bureau puts it so
succinctly: ‘‘Come to a city in.
Ame*-a where you can eat in
26. languages, stroll through
10 countries in eight blocks,
or take a roller-coaster ride

- back to the 19th cen ”,

John Steinbeck said of

it is? It’s a golden handcuff
with.the key thrown away’’.
William Saroyan, another
Pulitzer prize winner, once
exulted, ‘‘if you’re alive, you
can’t be bored in San
Franciso’’.

There’s verve and indivi-
dualism in its 2,500 restuar-
ants, bistros and the unique,
but good-clean-fun piano
bars, the latter being insti-
tutions from Union Square to
Fishermen’s Wharf. They
draw their share nightly and
are never a bore. Lefty
O’Doul’s continues to flour-
ish but to us, it isn’t the same
without the extraverted base-
ball great, who has left this
scene. But the piano bar
there is worth an hour’s stop.

pianist. ‘‘Play ‘Time on My
Hands’, "’ requests the
young swain, as his lady
companion breaks into song.

But it’s all part of the fun in
San Francisco’s piano bars.

We thought back years as
we passed The Rusty
Scupper. But we did revisit
Buena Vista, on Fishermen’s
Wharf, where they advertise
the best Ramos fizz and Irish
