A motion adopted by council Monday night asks the provincial government to provide one fully-equipped and staffed ambulance for the western end of the municipality, that the ex- isting ambulance stationed at Bellevue Avenue be fully- staffed on a 24-hour basis and that the provincial gov- ernment consider setting up a province-wide training program to upgrade the emergency skills of firemen. Aldermen were acting on a report from Richard Wagner of the Community Services Advisory Commission and fire chief Colin Evans that said the only improvement in ambulance service in West Van since 1978 has been ex- tension of service to Lions Bay on a 24-hour call-out basis. The report also says that the response time of the municipality’s lone am- bulance to inhalator calls and motor vehicle accidents, particularly in the western end of the municipality, is 100 slow. But the report also quotes Emergency Health Services general manager R. P. Beckett as saying the number of calls in West Vancouver does not warrant another ambulance. ‘‘The major considera- tion, however, is funding,’’ the report continues. ‘‘The cost of an ambulance would be in the area of $400,000 a year.”’ The report says in light of the provincial government’s restraint program it appears unlikely that the additional funds will be made available to West Vancouver at this time.
