CHILDREN have two things in spades: sim- plicity and audacity. So when 11-year-old Trevor is given a routine school assignment (“Think of a way to change the world and put it into action”), he takes it to heart, and comes up with a simple plan that he thinks will make the world a - truly better place. When someone does you a good turn, don’t pay them back, “pay it forward”: do altruistic deeds for three peo- ple who need help. Then those three people will help three more people, and so on. The first person on Trevor’s (Haley Joel Osment, "Sixth Sense) list is Jerry (Jim Caviezel) a homeless drug” addict. Trevor offers him a bow! of Alpha-Bits, 2 place to sleep and his savings. By the time Trevor's bewildered mom (Helen Hunt) appears, hungover and shotgun in hand, Jerry is fixing her truck, paving it forward. Trevor's next project is a little trickier. Mr. Simonet (Kevin Spacey) is the Social Studies teacher who gave the assignment in the first place, -but he needs some good for- tune of his own. Trevor fig- ures that the straight-laced Mr. Simonet would be per- feet for his alcoholic mother, and good to have around when his lout of a father (Jon Bon Jovi) stumbles back into rown. In a parallel story working its way backwards, a reporter and recipient of the pay it forward philosophy (Jay Mohr), is tracking the story. He traces what has become a social movement through a wealthy lawyer, a convict and a homeless woman (a virtual- ly unrecognizable Angie Dickinson). When the two stories finally come together, they converge nicely. Kevin Spacey, who won the Best Actor Oscar last year, might just be up for another one for his impecca- ble portrayal of a physically and emotionally scarred man terrified to break his solitary starched-shirt routine. Academy Award winner Helen Hunt is good, but not quite believable as the low- rent Arlene, despite the bad dye job and sleazy clothes. Haley Joel Osment, another Oscar nominee, proves that he’s one of the finest young actors today, in what could have been a disas- crously sappy role if mishan- dled. The flm’s setting, the bar- ren outskirts of Las Vegas, nicely complements the emo- tionally damaged characters who call the city home. ‘The only drawback to director Mimi Leder’s (Deep Jsnpact) film, is its hanky- wringing ending, which will prove too saccharine for many viewers. But for those who choose to put aside cynicism and embrace the film's message, Pay It Forward might just inspire some acts of kindness after the credits roll. Now that’s $9.75 well spent. ec: Doni Mi: masterpie ROOTS CELTIC CAP FOLK ’N’ ROOTS SERIES™ A Rogue Folk Club co-presentation _ a stab at expressing her true feelings. been People have listening to and toving Lucia di Lammermoor): zetti's bel canto ce, for more A than a century.
