The we Katharine Hamer News Reporter khamer@usnews.com FROM a small literary festival launched in Toronto 11 years ago, The Word On The Street has grown into a five-city celebration lof Canadian writing. The free festival is this Sunday, Sept. 24, trom 11 la.m.-6 p.m. in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, land Halifax. Described as a “literary theme park,” the Vancouver edition of the festival takes place in the streets around Library Square and the CBC plaza. Last year 200 writers Wwere involved in the day’s activities and 35,000 people visited the festival. An array of local publish- ers — among them Anvil Press, Arsenal Pulp Press land Harbour Publishing — will have stalls set up, selling new and backlisted books Presented by * Oe north shore ENE: and magazines. Activities throughout the day include a silent auction, 2 book design exhibition, a children’s books illustration exhibit and “wearable words,” where you can make and wear your own slogan. For kids, there’s face painting, book readings, and a Harry Potter trivia show. There are cookbook readings (Susan Mendelson, John Bishop), poetry read- ings (Esta Spalding, Billeh Nickerson), fiction readings (Anita Rau Badami, Bill Gaston), and panels on everything from how to get published to honing vour scriptwriting skills. The poetry slam at noon is among the most popular annual events. Psychologist Dr. Stanley Coren will also be giving a demonstration based on his book, Hew to Speak Dog with a canine assistant. With performances from stiltwalkers Bad Altitude (dressed as nuns), comedy troupe Rock Paper Scissors, jazz-rock popsters Ralph and “karaoke poet” Sheri-D Wilson, there’s something for everyone at Word on the Street — and it's a great chance to support focal wordsniiths.
