public concerns about proper car seat use.

Bachild from 20 w 40 pounds (9 to 18 ky) needs a torward-
facing car seat with a tether strap that goes from the back of the
seat to a metal anchor bolt fastened to the car:

achild irom +40 to 60 pounds (18 to 27 ky) needs 4 booster
seat. A booster seat raises the child so that the seat belt fits prop-
erly.

Once you have determined that your child is in the right seat
for his size, check the most common mistakes in car seat use:
® Make sure vou use a tether strap on a forward -facing car seat
for children 29 to 40 pounds. Parents sometimes do aot realize
that the tether strap is critical and required by law,

@ Make sure the harness holding the child into the car seat is
tight. A loose harness may not hold the child in the case of a
crash,

@ Make sure the car seat is secured tightly in the car. It should
NOt Move very much trom side to side.

Keep children in the back seat — it's safer for them.

§ Make sure you read and follow the car seat instructions.

If your child travels with anyone else, such as a babysitter, 4
day care, or a grandparent, make sure they are using the right
car seat for your child. They should know how to install it and
use it properly.
