A discarded candy wrapper here. An empty tissue box there. Considered separately packages do not scem to cre- B ate any big garbage problem. But imagine for a f moment that you must keep all the packaging that you acquire for one entire year, inside your home. You’ll soon see how pack- aging adds up. Within a week the cereal boxes, blister packs, paper wrappers and plastic bags will be spilling off the kitchen table. In one month the empty tin’ cans, acrosols, drink boxes, foam peanuts, and glass jars will be creeping down the hall. Tn one year the margarine tubs, bottles, yogurt con- tainers and plastic wrap will probably overflow the living room and be heading for the front door. ~ Packaging is an integral part: of our modern. conve- nience-oriented _ lifestyle. And it can be important: try bringing home a litre of milk without a container! But many products are packaged in excessive wrapping and non-recyclable materi _ In fact, some experts say that up.to 33% of the garbage going to our land- fills and incinerators is pack- aging. Choosing products with little or no packasing can make a significant dent in garbage. Consider a litre of miik. If you buy milk in a waxed car- ton, the empty carton nmst be thrown in the garbage. If vou buy it in a plastic jug, it can be recycled. But if you buy milk in a glass bort- ile, the bottle can be used again and again. Not only do you reduce garbage, you conserve natur- al resources because fewer new packages must be made. Reducing packaging can be as simple as using your own shopping bags. Every week Canadians take home a staggering 55 million plastic grocery bags. Buck the trend. Even if you forget your bag, reduce waste by saying no to bags for small purchases and putting all of your purchases in the first bag you receive. When you find. similar quality items in different packages, select the item with the least amount of packaging. For example, many deodorants an toothpaste tubes no longer have the bulky outer paper box. Buy items “loose” instead of in packages. Scoop screws or nails from a bin instead of pur- chasing a bubble package. Buy baking ingredients and other food stuffs from bulk bins. You'll save money and reduce garbage. Check out your options for purchasing an item with- out packaging. For example, buy a shirt from a hanger rather than a folded packaged shirt. Say no to extra tissue wrap for clothing. Leave the shue box at the . store. Or plan te use the box for fing oo drawers ar at home. If packaging is a necess. part. of vour purchase, choose packages that van be reused or recycled, Look for the “chasing arrows” reeveling symbol on products It means that the product is recyclable where facilities exist. Also, watch for the cling symbol printed wit! circle indicating that the product contains an amount of recycled material. Buying products with recycled content is an impor- tant way to support recy- cling. So the next time you con- sider purchasing a package, consider how you might avoid it, reuse it or recycle it. No one waats a pile of garbage, especially in their home! To learn more simple ways to reduce and reuse packaging call 437-GVRD (437-4873) to request your free copy of Hot Recycling Hints.
