Dear Editor: When it comes to health care funding by the provincial gov- ernment the people in North Van- couver are being short-changed. Community health services are provided to the residents on the North Shore by the North Shore Health Department governed by the North Shore Union Board of Health. The board is composed of representatives from the funding partners, i.e. the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, the District of West Vancouver and Schoo! District #44. (They also provide som: services to School District .¢5, West Vancouver.) The funding is derived from contribution from the municipal partners, the school district and the province of B.C. through the Minis‘ry of Health. Seventeen health units in B.C. are 100 per; cent funded by the province; five others receive fun- ding under cost-sharing agree- ments, But the contributions of the province to North Van are far lower than they are to roost other areas. As a result, staffing levels and expenditures are lower. The result is that the North Shore Union Board of Health: © pays a much higher share of preventive programming, vis a vis the province when compared to other health departments. ® supports all community mental health treatment programs out of municipal dollars a service funded by the province in every other jurisdiction. This, of course, has a very detrimental effect on the North Shore Union Board of Health and what it can do. This great injusies & to the residents of the North Shore, the majority of whom diligently voted Socred, has been brought to the attention of the government numerous times, but; so far, no action has been forth- coming, and the result is higher taxes and lower services for North # Shore residents.
