Meant That ~— God What neighbor? What about loving our road-raged neighbor, our AIDS neighbor, our| immigrant neighbor? No exclusions. God calls us to love our neighbor. Who can you Ineveitably, he found himself? seated next to Licutenant- Governor Bell-Trving aca Cancer Society dinner. As they chatted, the reasons for their instant rapport became evident. Raised in Hampshire, Eagle describes himself’as the family “throw- back” to its Scottish ancestry. From the moment he was old enough to travel alone he has taken himself off to the Scottish Highlands at every. opportunity. A talented water-colorist as well as a writer, he loves nothing better to sit on a rigged, heathered hill over- looking a loch or the sea, + punctuated by craggy Hebridean islets, capturing, their austere beauty in the most difficult and demanding of visual media. Water-color is good train- ing tor a writer. [t requires both vision and craft; the instinet to select and com- pose salient features ata glance and the skill to express them quickly and confidently but with a kind of self-¢ffac- ing modesty. Any clever owit can write personalized Gonzo Journalism. Weiting good non-fiction without putting yourself into the story is becoming almost as much a fost art as the ancient concept of citizenship is becoming, a lost value. Jor the Service of the Crawn is a that rare combination of subject and author in pertect sympathy. Though a generation younger, Eagle understands and shares the values and world-view of the Bell-Trvings intimately. He commemorates them without culogizing, (as I'm doing here by extrapola- tion), letting his account stand on its own and leaving the reader to grasp the impli- cations. Surprisingly, it isn’t that much of a reach, The values of duty, loyalty, courage and Irving shares in family iriump public service eptomized by Budge and Nancy Bell-Irving strike a chord with many members of our fractured and bewildered suciety. The official launch of In the Service of the Crown, held at the old Scatorth Armoury, packed the house and sold more than pwice the number of books anticipated by the organizers. Fortunately Ray Eagle had the foresight to pack an extra case of books in the trunk of his car--he had to fetch them halfivay through the evening, once the scotch and the bag- pipes had begun to flow. Now that’s a book-launch. the North Shore SUTHERLAND CHURCH 630 East 19th Se, North Vancouver 988-6923 10:00 am Summer Worship Service and Children’s Church Sunday’s Topic: “Gifts from the Fulinass of Grace” Dr. Douglas Monkemeier Youth Pastor Todd Wiebe Licensed Preschool Cail 988-2163 ST.
