The sun is out, people are smiling and the editor is on
holiday so let's leave all seriousness for another week
and enjoy the blossoms. El Nino or not, it’s been a mild
and comparatively dry winter by Vancouver standards.
Debating whether to cut the grass for the first time is
not so bad when we can watch the snow in Calgary on
the news. Open your eyes and color is everywhere: for-
sythia, flowering quince, camellias, carly rhododen-

ns and bunches of blooms that I can’t name. But
sowing isn’t the point, is it? Enjoyment is. Round
about this time, the folks in Oak Bay, Victoria partici-
pate in an annual flower count. Then they like to phone
acquaintances back cast on the flimsiest of pretexts and volunteer the results as an
aside. It’s one of the few ways the west gets to stick it to the east.
