morth shove ___MAIL Bo (Downloading inequitable Dear Editor: Jan Noble’s Oct. 24 article on the traffic congestion in the Seymour area awas long overdue. My colleague Dan Jarvis has been commenting on and pointing out these escalating problems from the day he was first elected as MLA B for North Vancouver-Seymour. Highways minister Lois Boone wrote eto Judi Ainsworth, president of the Ma North Vancouver chamber, that “this Aa government is aware that there are con- Acerns with regard to the Lynn/Scymour area.” She goes on to say that “the province is asking local governments to assume greater responsibility with regard to developments such as the Canadian Super Store ...” First, the government on Oct. 21 announced seven Lower Mainland Highway Projects, six in NDP ridings. Second, the government found money in Mission to assist in an interchange ($1.5 million) and the government has found $12 million to improve the Sunshine Coast Highway in Sechelt in the vicinity News Sunday, November 9, 1997 — North Shore News - 9 of a proposed Sechelt Band shopping, centre. This same government con- tributed to killing a shopping centre in Squamish by asking too much of the developer in regard to-traffic improve- ments. So there we have it: money to NDP territory, and over to you, local government and developers if it is Liberal territory. The government downloads on all municipalities, but the treatment is inequitable. Are we surprised? Jeremy Dalton, MLA West Vancouver-Capilano aSeeking a bicycie-friendly crossing Dear Editor: The safety of cyclists on the Lions Gate Bridge has been a subject of much media cover- ae age larely. m™ The province is currently m cngaged in 2 process to find a private parmer to develop a Bnew, four-lane crossing. If the process results in a partnership, the new crossing will be B designed to be bicycle-friendly. The Lions Gate project team is working closely with cycling groups and the GVRD’s bicy- Mcle advisory committee to Bensure that the views of the @ cycling community are incor- a porated into the design for a a new crossing. ‘A winning design would include wider sidewalks, divid- ed for cyclists and pedestrians. There would be better access at improve the flow of cycling traffic. The Stanley Park cause- way would be improved to make it safer and more conve- nient for cyclists. And not only will a new four-lane crossing, be better for bicycles, it will be safer and more convenient for pedestrians too. If the government is unable to identify a winning design for a four-lane crossing, it will repair the existing three-lane bridge. This work would also provide for wider, safer lanes on the bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. As media reports have noted, cyclists want govern- ment to provide safer routes and to involve cyclists in plan- ning activities. Both of these ects are reflected in the work of the Lions Gate Project and will ultimately result in a bicy- cle-friendly bridge.
