increase NORTH YANCOUVER School District 44's school calendar bylaw, approved Tuesday, allows public schools to opt out of the Education Ministry's stan- dard school year calendar — including its community interaction days. EL LL AREAL EE PE PENI NS NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD By Kevin Gillies The Education Ministry‘s school calendar regulation stipu- fated for the past school year that two instructional days had to be converted into community inter- action days and used to help par- ents and community members understand the now-defunct Year 2000 program. The community interaction days can be designated instruc- tional days, but any school’s move must have unanimous sup- port from its parents, teachers and administrators before the board will make the change. The days were unpopular with parents duce to the luss of iwo instructional days. Many work by day and can't afford the day off. Proposals to change the calen- dar can be brought to the school board by a parent group or a school employees’ union. The board would then inform the other affected groups of the board's intent 10 seek approval 10 days before the issue is discussed. Currently, all schools in B.C. are governed by the schoo! calen- dar regulation. Superintendent of schools Robin Brayne acknowledged that in theory the bylaw could be used to alter the school calendar for purposes other than the communi- ty interaction days but, he said, in practical terms that will not be possible because of employment agreements that are already in place.
