Plan your emergency escape IN THE event of a fire, earthquake or an explosion, sur- vival time may be measured in on- ly seconds. Be sure to make note of several exits whenever you enter a restau- rant, store, theatre or any other public building. Each building has its own char- acteristics, which can mean dif- ferent evacuation routes. When you are in a_ theatre waiting for the movie to begin, count the number of rows to the nearest exit. In most cases you have only a few moments to decide on what action to take. Once the alarm sounds, do not delay in making your way toward an exit. Your pre-determined actions could save your life. In most cases it is the smoke, not the flames, that causes injury and death, Never attempt to evacuate by way of the elevator — it could stall on the fire floor and you would be trapped. Floral artists display blooms FLORAL ART, ijike sandcastle sculpting, is a temporary art form. Inevitably, like the tide coming in, flower arrangements wilt and die. But there is nothing tem- porary about the people who take up the floral art challenge. Witness 82-year-old Frances Hornby — she became intrigued many :decades and hundreds of beautiful arrangements ago. . Says Hornby, ‘‘Garage sales ‘and swap meets are wonderful places to find new and interesting shapes to include in arrange- ments.” The current president of the B.C. Florai Art Society (BCFAS), Duka Roberts, said, ‘‘Once a per- son starts to arrange flowers for fun, things like hiking, gardening and beachcombing take on new dimensions. “You find yourself constantly on the lookout for interesting lines in nature that can be incorporated into the next arrangement.”’ What happens when a flower arranger accumulates too many props or grows tired of a par- ticular piece? ‘‘That’s easy,’’ says Hornby, ‘‘take them to the next Floral Art Society meeting and sell them at the mini-sale table. “Everyone wins — someone gets a treasure, i thin out my storage cupboard and the proceeds go toward educational treats for our group.” The BCFAS meets on the se- cond Monday of each month from 10 am. to 2 p.m. in the Elks Hall, 6884 Jubilee Ave., Burnaby.
