16 —- Friday, September i, 1992 ~ North Shore News HOME & GARDEN Farms open doors to public CHILLIWACK FARMERS are offering their urban friends and neighbors a unique opportunity to get a first-hand look at agriculture today. The Agriscope Society, in coop- eration with the District of Chilliwack-area farmers, will be opening their farms so visitors can see just how their food is being produced and learn more about the issues which affect agriculture today. Tour participants will be able to see a high-density apple orchard, a berry and currant farm, a honey producer, a Christmas tree farm, a dairy farm, a rose greenhouse and a hazelnut grove. There will be refreshments and activities of interest to both children and adults. “Fraser Valley agriculture is important to everyone in British Columbia, since local farmers produce a lot of the food we eat every day,’’ says Agriscope secre- tary Bill Weismiller. “Agriculture is also an impor- - tant contributor to ithe local economy. It is the Fraser-Cheam Regional District’s largest in- dustry, with annual farm-gate production of $150 million,’’ he adds. Tour-goers may choose which and how many of the seven farms they wish to visit. Those interested can pick up a passport/map at the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information Centre at 44150 Luckakuck Way, Sardis, or at any participating farm. Directional signs will also be posted throughout the Chilliwack area on Sept. 19 to assist visitors in locating the farms. The tour has been designated the ‘Harvest Tour,’ since many farmers are in the midst of their harvest season. As people take the tour, they are likely to see signifi- cant harvest activities and pass several roadside stands, offering farm-fresh produce. Passports include an entry form for several draws, including a heart-to-heart package of a night for two at the Chilliwack Holiday i. The Agriscope Society is a group of concerned farm and non-farm people who believe in the importance of agriculture to the economic prosperity of the Fraser Cheam Regional District and are using this tour to draw at- tention to the efforts of the local farmers. “A Ict our urban neighbors never get to see a real farm, so this is a real opportunity for them,’’ Weismiller says. ‘‘We hope the tour will show them how important, innovative and en- vironmentally responsible today's farmers are. “Only when they see how their produce is being grown will people appreciate the safety and quality of B.C. foods.”’ For more 795-8395. information call ‘OUR HIGHEST QUALITY INTERIOR PRODUCTS ALL INSTOCK WALLPAPER up to | 1075 Roosevelt Crescent § | Noevih Vancouver {2 blocks behind the Avaion Hotel) OPEN DAILY: Fit, 9-9; Sun. 12-4 e Outside In!
