MAILBOX Tories must Dear Editor, The most fundamental aspect of the current cause of inflation is the federal deficit. The refusal to ac- cept this fact and the continued use of the high in- terest rate as a temporary inflation control instru- ment is causing permanent damage to Canadian business and, therefore, to our overall economy. Mulroney and his Conservative government have, through their failure to deal with the deficit, doubled Canada’s national debt in less than six years. Their high interest rate policy only aggravates the deficit and increases the rate at which our debt grows. At the presem rate of debt growth the debt ap- reduce debt pears to be heading for a level where we will no longer be able to pay the interest on it. This in turn will give us the same problems as those of the Third World countries who overborrowed to “‘create a good life’ for their people. We must write our MPs, MLAs, news editors and others of influence, like the Chambers of Commerce, to force the government to change this policy. We can’t afford to wait another two years as by then it may be ioo late. Please act today! D.F. LAUKSEN Open Letter to 1991 graduation committees: With the emphasis these days on the future well-being of. the planet, ecological conservation and sound fiscal management in order to achieve these programs, would it not be a good idea for your graduation class to change the course of history and perform some significant community activ- ity for which your group could receive credit and public ac- colades? In the past, the major contribu- tion made by youths visible to the general public has been the graffiti sprayed on bridges, rocks and other public places. It is time to put all this to rest and take a responsible attitude to the larger community you are about to enter as graduates from high school, where your contribution will be welcomed and your efforts suitably rewarded. An interest in community af- fairs and local management and politics could help change the di- rection of recent years, where many politicians are ridiculed, mistrusted and perceived to be out to satisfy only their own interests and feather their own nests, ft is time for a change for the better and who better to initiate this than the graduating classes of 1991? It is only by such positive demonstrations of their energy, and determination to change attitudes towards consumerism and pollution that we shall have any hope of lessening the damage the ever-in- creasing human population is wreaking on this planet. The recent fracas at McDonald’s in which the young Greens protested against the use of 2cological- ly unsound products should not deter our support of our Young Greens. Remember, youth can be equated with enthusiasm and spirit, but it is mot always tempered with discretion. lc is a happy outcome that McDonald's has an- nounced its withdrawal of -the use of foam con- tainers, and despite the Young Greens’ indiscretion of trespass, they have achieved their purpose, and helped our only planet to become a little less sick.
