A heartfelt and twisted sound
from a band that sounds like a
skewed version of what the Doors
might have sounded like had they
traded in their dinky keyboards for
jangling guitars.

It’s fitful chording with a down-
right anxious lyrical component
for those who care to indulge in a
poetic bit of cold-sweat scariness:
“Tam only a piece of trash up a
mile high/Grabbing at the falling
sand which held me in the sky.”

Algeria is proving itself a hotbed
for newfound creative musical
energy. The undulating vocal ef-
fect of a rai pop singer is fluid and
guttural and deliciously blue.

well is the layered deployment of
synthesizers and guitars hitched to
a bedrock, trance-inducing
