BEFORE CHOOSING
a diamond, it is impor-
tant that the consumer
learn about the four C's
which determine the
value of the diamond.

The four C's — cut,
color, clarity and carat
weight — explain the
difference in quality be-
tween diamonds and
therefore the value.

If the diamond is well
cut it will maximize the
brilliance or the ‘‘fire’’
in the stone. Many peo-
ple confuse cut with the
shape of a diamond.

Diamonds are cut in-
to a number of shapes
depending on the origi-
nal shape of the rough
stone. Popular shapes
include brilliant, oval,

peer, marquise,
emerald, princess
(square cut) and heart.

A diamond’s color is
measured by the lack of
color in a diamond. The
absence of color allows
the diamond to purely
reflect and refract light.

In short, the best col-
or is no color.

Clarity refers to the
diamond's lack of natu-
ral interior inclusions or
flaws. The fewer the in-
clusions, the more
valuable the stone
because the flow of light
is less obstructed.

Carat refers to the
weight of a diamond
and is a term derived
from ancient times
when the unit of

measure was determined
by the weight of a carob
seed,

The larger the stone,
the rarer and = more
valuable. Approximate-
ty 250 tons of ore must
be mined and processed
in order to produce a
one carat polished dia-
mond.

Budget is often the
first consideration when
selecting a diamond
engagement ring. Many
couples find that two
months salary is an ap-
propriate spending
guideline to follow.
