choosing a body shop

claims facility after suffering some kind of dam-
age at the hands of their owners or another

motorist.

one of B.C.’s 1,000-plus
body shops.

dorse any specific shop, (the
choice is yours to make), our
adjusters and estimators are
often asked for tips on how
and what to look for in a
bedy shop. In response, we
have prepared some general
tips which have been
published in a brochure en-
titled ‘‘Choosing a body
shop,’’ available at claims
facilities and Autoplan
Brokers.

to ensure that there will be
no charges other than those
outlined in the estimate you
teceived from ICBC. This
estimate will set out the parts
and paint work needed and
the hcurly labor rate.

for any extra costs, except if
the shop found additional
damage caused by the acci-
dent, in which case the ICBC
estimate would be revised.

Inspect the shop

A well-maintained build-
ing with clean, well-organiz-

ed reception and repair shop
areas, Suggests a profes-
sional approach. Depending
on the work you need done,
a shop should have the fo'-
towing equipment in order to
repair most vehicles effec-
tively:

© anchoring equipment, to
hold the vehicle in place dur-
ing repairs;

¢ pulling equipment, to
Straighten autobody compo-
nents;

evehicle dimension
measuring equipment;

¢MIG (metal inert gas)
welding equipment, to weld
high strength steel;

© a paint spray booth.

Ask the operator to ex-
plain any unfamiliar pro-
cesses Or equipment recom-
mended for your vehicle.

OF course, in addition to
up-to-date equipment, 2
body shop needs craftsmen
with the necessary skills to
do the job properly. You
might ask to see work
recently completed or in
progress to judge for
yourself the quality of the
workmanship.

There may also be a
display of certificates in-
dicating the staff has taken
training programs to’ acquire
special skills.
