The card may be obtained in any French railroad station and is called the Carte Vermeil. In con- junction with this is a RailEurope program good for 18 countries, ei- ther first or second-class rail fares reduced by 50 per cent (30 per cent in some of the Iron Curtain coun- tries such as Hungary). Eurail passes are still an ex- cellent buy, but the .traveller is limited by the travel dates on the pass. The Carte Vermeil and the RailEurope reductions allow for sporadic and spur-of-the-moment journeys at half price. een Here’s one I'd never heard of but it might be one of those island get-aways that come to mind after a lousy week at the office. I might be way off base, but I got the feeling that Vachon Island might be where many of the flower children of the "60s decided to ride out the storm of approaching middle-age on herb and goat farms. Anyway, you can get there by taking the Fauntleroy ferry from West Seattle. It’s a 15-minute boat ride — take your car as the island is 15 miles long and between one and seven miles wide. I learned about Vachon from one of the operators of a stall in the Pike Place market in Seattle. The Country Store and Farm sells an interesting array of herbs and herbal vinegars. Vachon is hardly a tourist trap — there aren’t any hotels, but guests are welcomed at any number of Bed and Breakfast homes. Here are four of the listings 1 located: Beach Cottage B&B, (206) 567-4689; Purple Finch Haven, (206) 463-5631; Smyth House, (206) 567-4049; Swallow’s Nest, (206) 463-2646. Ali can be reached by mail by simply writing Vachon Island, WA, 98070 or you can get more information by phoning the Business Association at (206) 567- 4179 (P.O. Box i035, Vachon 98070).
