Tennis duo go TWO NORTH Shore teams will be going to the nationals after guali- fying at the Remington Family Tennis provincial final lasi weekend. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS | News Reporter First seeds Pam Hunter and her daughter, Sue Fought, won the mother/daughter title for their se- cond year. In a repeat of last year’s final, Hunter and Fought of Hollyburn Country Club, defeated the No. 2 seeds Leona Sporer and daughter Caroline Sporer of Bur- _ naby, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Also repeating their provincial championship performance in play Sunday at the North Shore Winter Club were Tom Jackson and his son, David, from Vancouver. The No. 1 seeded Jacksons defeated North Vancouver's Jim Walker and his son, Stefano, 7-6, 6-1. “We ran out of gas,’’ Jim Walker said, explaining a weak se- cond set. Fabio will be leaving in September for his second year on a full schol- arship at Texas Tech. “‘He’s played some of the top players in the world,’’ Jim Walker said. Sixteén-year-old Stefano is also a top contender. He will be playing a double header this summer in two age categories of the junior nationals. AMBLESIDE PITCH AND PUTT TOURNAMENT Baker putts to success THE EIGHTH Annual Ambleside Pitch and Putt Tournament took place Saturday. Of the 250 entrants, 80 finalists played in the tourney in four categories. . The grand champion was Mathew Baker with the lowest gross score of $1. Baker also won the men’s open category with a net score of 48%. Runners up were John Spaham with 50 and Richard Baker Junior with 52. Dave Mason won the seniors’ to Canada finals With their winning and runner- up performances, the two North Shore teams will be heading for the National Final of the Remington Family Tennis Championships, September 1-4 at the National Tennis Centre in Toronto. At last year’s national final, Hunter and Fought finished se- cond, coming within two games of taking the uational championship and qualifying for the interna- tional final in Switzerland. This year’s international final will be played next spring in Port St. Lucie, Florida. This is the second year of the family tennis program in B.C. and the second time the provincials have been hosted by the North Shore Winter Ctub. division with a net score of S!, followed closely by Robert Shan- non with 52 and Harold Stackhouse with 52%. Fran Chandler scored 54% to come out on top in the ladies’ cat- egory. Kathy Power with a score of 55 and Joyce Colonval with 55% were second and third. In the junior division Paul! Hip- pel won with a net score of 52, followed by Brendon Armstrong ‘ with 54, who narrowly beat An- drew Berry with 54%, E & Co-sponsors of the tournament, Park Royal Shopping Centre and the North Shore News, were pres- ent at the awards ceremony. Per Danielsen of Park Royal and Noel Wright of the News presented the trophies in the com- pany of Ald. Pat Boname and tournament president Gordon Rowntree.
