EIGHTEEN MONTHS of
work paid off for North
Vancouver’s Luke Balogh
when the engine he co-built
powered a repiica 1927
Model T Ford to a world re-
cord at the Bonneville Salt
Flats.

Balogh, 33, said of the secret
behind clocking the record two-
way average of 143.799 mph. ‘“‘It’s
tuning to get the most power out
of it, and using different gear
ratios.”’

In a class usually dominated by
six-cylinder Chevrolet engines,
Balogh and partner Doug King of
San Fransisco shattered the earlier
record of 137.136 mph using a 284
Ford flathead motor with Hemi
conversion heads and Hilborn fuel
injection.

“‘Nobody had really spent the
time to do the research to get the
power (from a Ford engine),’’ ex-
plained the local auto shop owner.
“‘We did, and we were able to win.

“It was my first time there (at
Bonneville) and we were able to set
a record,”’ he said, ‘It was great
— I'm hooked.”’

Though the earlier record stood
since 1985, Balogh is not optimistic
that the new time will remain in-
tact after next year’s race.

Now recovered from the thrill of
that recent victory, Balogh and
King are preparing to take on
another world record next month
in the Mojave Desert.
