© get this straight DEADLINES being what they are, this was written before the West Vancouver council meeting of Monday night. So it may be out of date. An enraged populace may have chased Dor Lanskail and his accomplices down the road with pit- chfork and musket without my having mentioned it. We're talking about the atrocity known as the twin-tower develop- ment on Tayjor Way and Marine Drive. You know, the one that’s been dreamt up on our behalf by planners, politicians, lawyers, developers and other enemies of the people. Newcorp Corporation Ltd., of whom few have ever heard. On May 12, this was announced ina three-paragraph press release designed not to make the front pages. There was no mention of any 2l-storey towers, for instance. Just towers. T he proposed monuments to madness will have a mysterious tunnel that will likely cause confusion in this age and wonder in future ages. They will also have 21 storeys each, and will therefore be even higher than the Park Royal Towers If you five in North Van, don’t think this doesn’t concern you. No man is ap island. Among other things, what this crazy scheme will do is to worsen the traffic problem on the Lions Gate Bridge. The proposed monuments to madness will have a mysterious tunnei that will likely cause confu- sion in this age and wonder in future ages. They will also have 21 storeys each, and will therefore be even higher than the Park Royal Towers. The project is described as a gateway approach to West Van. But I know of no one outside the above-named wino wants such a gateway. We would rather have a moat and drawbridge designed to keep developers out, they already having ruined the waterfront for peasants who don’t live in castles. If we can’t keep the Royal Pon- tiac car dealer at Marine and Taylor Way (he amusing us with the slogans with which he deco- rates his front window),we would like to see a pig farm there. The smell couldn’t be any worse than what we'll get from two 21-storey ” towers. Soothing sounds emanate from municipal hall on this one. It is claimed, for instance, that there has been all the public discussion and publicity on this development that anyone could want. Lies, all lies. The publicity of which municipal hall boasts took place in 1981, when the area was rezoned. This deal didn’t exist, and even then the locals didn’t want the jandscape changed. But no one took any notice of them. Locals exist to take orders from their bet- ters or from people who aren’t af- fected. In 1986, the hall called for bids — in the legal sections of Van- couver, Toronto and other foreign newspapers. On May 9 last, council met in- camera (meaning out of public focus) and gave the go-ahead to “7? May 23 was a holiday, so there was no council meeting. Very con- venient. The deai was therefore pushed through on Thursday,.May 26. The result, again, was that you had to be a secret agent to know about it. There was a one paragraph story about the change of date in this newspaper, because council was careful to sound no alarm. There were also notices at the cop-shop, library and the hall! The municipality put out a memorandum July 8 stating there had been ‘‘extensive press coverage”’ and “‘intensive public discussion’”’ on this issue, For fur- ther laughs, it was emphasized that “decisions respecting this site were thoroughly debated in 1981.” That stuff must have been the work of a gag-writer, because it was further stated that the West Van deal was different from the Expo land one in that the Expo site has gone for good, whereas this one has only a 99-year lease! Can we have a party when it ex- Pires? Who and what is Newcorp? It is an amalgamation of two other obscure companies that took place in August, 1987. But what other projects has it completed? For all we know, Newcorp could be a front for more Hong Kong dough. That would please Pat Carney, she being keen on this area becoming another Hong Kong, Singapore or Tokyo. Listen, Don Lanskail. You became mayor under the slogan of ‘open government,”’ and West Vanners tossed out Derrick Hum- phreys in the hope that they would get it. But as a woman who campaign- ed for you puts it: “pitt ferent faces same regime.’ During Ambleside’s Revitalization please enter through our back lane entrance.
