28 - Friday, June 12, 1937 - North Shore News BURGLARY GENERALLY hap- pens to people who are not prepared for it. No home, whether house, apartment or cottage, can be com- pletely burglar-proof. However, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the security of every home can be improved to the point that a burglar will be frustrated or discouraged in a break-in attempt. It is most important that door locks are properly mounted, are of good quality and able to be deadlocked. Night chains on doors provide virtually no protection against forced entry and are merely privacy devices to bar immediate access. « While it is true that from the standpoint of physical force a lock should be as strong as the door to which it is attached, the reverse is equally true. Outside doors, therefore, should not be of hollow construction. Even the best locks and doors can be defeated by a burglary method known as spreading. When building a new “home or cottage, consult your con- tractor about reinforcing all exte- rior door frames. Sliding glass doors or windows can be lifted out of their tracks and this possibility can be eliminated by inserting one or more self-tapping screws in the upper metal track, leaving the “heads partially exposed. This will allow the door or window to be moved laterally, but will render it impossible to be lifted out of the track. A square-edged length of wood, placed in the bottom track, will resist lateral forcing when security is desired. You shoud know where all the keys for your locks are distributed and never hide them on door ledges, under door mats or in mail boxes. These are the first places experienced burglars look. If you have Jost or mislaid your keys, have the locks changed im- mediately. When inspecting your home for weak points, keep in mind the burglars will use ladders, garbage pails, trellises and low roofs to reach windows and doors that are not normally accessible. Your garage should also be locked, not only to prevent theft, but to discourage burglars from using your tools and equipment to break into your home. It is suggested that valuabie possessions, such as expensive jewellery and stocks and bonds be kept in a safety deposit box at your bank, trust company or credit union. Another recommended practice is the marking of driver’s licence numbers or social insurance numbers on small value items that are common targets for burglars, by means of a special engraving pencil or invisible ink pen. Ask your insurance agent or local police for advice on this iden- tification program.
