THE PHONE just kept ringing. By STEPH RINCTON Contributing Wruer But no answer convinced the Capilano Community Services volunicer to keep on calling. Eighty-four-year-old Art Britton finally managed (to reach ihe phone, after he had been on the floor all night with a broken hip. “They phoned and I was on the floor here.”* Britton recounts, ex- plaining he might have lain there undiscovered for a lot longer were it not for the daily check calls he receives. Britton, who lives alone, told the volunteer that he had fallen, and an ambulance was quickly dispat- ched to tend to his injury. CALLER THANKED Britton said he can thank the caller for rescuing him from his predicament. Almost two years ago, the daily phone-check program was set up by Capilano Community Services to fill a need in the community — to check on seniors and others who live alone to ensure all is in order. Executive director Sheila Gilniour explains there are current- ly eight volunteers who take turns phoning the 10 seniors in the pro- gram. Most volunteers telephone from the switchboard at the organiza- tion’s office, she says. But others, like Barbara Jones, place their calls from home. “*We talk about nearly everything,’’ Jones says en- thusiastically, referring to her phoning duties. ‘All along I’ve wanted to do something with the elderly and now I'm doing some- thing I like to do.” CHANGE WANTED After being in the office world for 15 years, ‘'] just got tired of secretarial work," the 35-year-old volunteer explains. SERVICE ENJOYED Gilmour emphasizes that all the seniors in the program, not just Britton, really enjoy the service. They look forward to the calls, she says, because “they know who they're talking to.” In the event something is found to be amiss, the volunteer phones the program’s coordinator, who then sends someone ‘o the senior’s home to ‘‘see if everything is okay,’’ Gilmour explains. Since its inception at the end of April, 1985, the program has been growing, slowly increasing its numbers of volunteers and reci- pients, Anyone interested in joining the program, either as someone mak- ing the calls or as someone receiv- ing the calls, can contact Capilano Community Services at 988-7115.
