EXPO 86. opened with a royal flourish Friday as Prince
Charles made the long-awaited announcement at B.C. Place

Stadium.

organizations, Charles noted his
wife’s own involvement with
charitable groups.

On board were Charles and Diana,
who earlier had been in Victoria and
Nanaimo — the first stops on their
seven day tour of B.C.

Before disembarking, the royal
couple waved to the crowd that
had gathered along the west pro-
menade dock, but only a lucky few
were able to get a glimpse.

After the welcoming reception,

“ Charles and Diana retired to their

suite in the closely-guarded Pan
Pacific Hotel.

Outside, ©. many royal-watchers
were still waiting, hoping. for: a
better view of the couple.

bought this special outfit. I’m very

“Mila Mulroney unfortunately
got in the way, but I did recognize
the Princess’ hat.”” :

Katrin Verschelden, an Expo
visitor from Belgium, said she was
able.to wave-io the Princess from
her-position outdoors. But she said
the best part was being‘ booked ‘at
the same hotel as the royal couple.

“It’s a very good feeling to be in
the same hotel as Chuck and Di,”
she said. ‘*It gives a nice feeling.’’

Kelowna - Saturday. .and: Prince
