Music therapists now
work mostly with the elderly
and with special needs
children. There are two
music therapy departments -
- at Sunnyhill (Children’s)
Hospital and at Valleyview
(Senior's) Hospital. With
both groups music therapy
has been shown to reach
those clients with emotional

and communication § dif-
ficulties faster than other
therapies.

There are also. other

advantages to this new form
of therapy. “In addition to
the work with clients, music
therapy also offers the staff
members of health facilities
an opportunity to recharge

their own battenes,” says
Burke.
“Music, being a_ social

activity, can take a central
place in the smooth func-
tioning of hospitals, aiding
communication between
staff members and between
chents and staff. Music
permeates the = facility
because while you can shut
out the world simply by
closing your cycs, you
cannot shul your cars ~

Physically Handicapped,

Burke 1s proud of the
program's accomplishments.
“There are now few people
in the health field who have
not heard of us or attended a
music therapy workshop,”
he said. “In five years that in
itself is quite an ac-
compkhshment.”

Of course, there are a few
problems. Students in the
Music Therapy program
come from = all across
Canada, but after studying
for two years in B.C. they
gencrally get to like it so

much they don't want to
leave. That means that B.C.
is fast becoming the music
therapy mecca of Canada—of
the approximately 60 music
therapists in the country, 30
work in Vancouver.

“Music,” says Burke,
“simultaneously effects our
bodies, emotions, mind and
spint. Music therapy offers a
total experience that has the
effect of giving us greater
creative choice in our lives,
and a better understanding
of ourselves and our
relations to others.”
