8 - Wedresday, April 18, 1990 - North Shore News NV educator passes away PETER BEUGGER, a high-profile North Vancouver educator and author, passed away April 6 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 49. Mr. Beugger was born in 1940 in South Africa. He attended elementary and ‘ Peter Beugger. high school in Johannesburg, and after graduation attended the Uni- versity of Witwatersarnd in Johannesburg, where he graduated with degrees in geology, geography and education. He got his first teaching job at a high school in Johannesburg, where he met his wife Audrey, who was also a teacher. Both were active in student poli- tics and often took stands against apartheid. They married on July 1, 1967 and then travelled for on? year to Switzerland, Iran, Thailand and ended up in Hong Kong. The Beuggers arrived in B.C. in July 1968, and after a few days in Vancouver, they were hired as teachers by North Vancouver District 44 School board: Mr. Beugger with Canyon Heights Elementary school and his wife Audrey with Braemar Elementary school. Mr. Beugger eventually became principal at several North Van- couver schools, including Norgate, Seymour Heights and Ridgeway. But he also collaborated with a University of Victoria professor in writing a serics of three science text books, all of which are in wide use across North America. Because of his achievements, Mr. Beugger was the subject of a television documentary. Tarri Grieve, who worked with the North Vancouver school district during the late 1960s and early 1970s, and was a good friend of Mr. Beugger’s, describes him as one of the most influential educators B.C. has ever known. ‘*He was an outstanding teacher. The most recent science text book he co-authored was just released and was presented to him at his bedside while he was dying,”’ said Grieve. ‘‘He’s just been an out- standing teacher.” “He’s the type of person who truly appreciated life and all its challenges. An example of that is an address he gave to North Van- couver school administrators on his illness. “He said in his speech that ‘when my doctors talked to me about my cancer, they said they couldn’t find any reason why I should have it because of the healthy lifestyle [ led and suggested that I was dealt a lousy poker hand in the game of life. I can’t accept that. P’ve been dealt a good hand because I have a wonderful wife and children, I’ve worked with wonderful peopie and I’ve had an opportunity to author science books,”’’ said Mr. Grieve. ‘“‘He was a person who was always lookiug for better ways. He's been a very significant friend of mine and a very significant educator to B.C.”’ Mr. Beugger is survived by his wife Audrey, children Michael, 17, Allison, 15, Carolyn, 14, mother Louise, all of North Vancouver, and sister Ruth of South Africa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society. Tanker moratorium called for GREATER VANCOUVER Regional District directors are cali- ing for a moratorium on any in- crease in Burrard Inlet tanker traf- fic pending a full review of the en- vironmental impact of such a move. The board said should include full volvement. Its action follows the release of a letter from David Brander-Smith, chairman of the Public Review Panel on Tanker Safety and Marine Spills Response Capacity, to federal Environment Minister the review public in- Lucien Bouchard. In his letter, Brander-Smith said an environmental assessment “should examine the effects of in- creased movements of crude oil and petroleum products through Burrard Inlet and establish a sus- tainable limit for such activity.’’ During hearings held in November, the review panel received submissions supporting a moratorium from North Van- couver, Vancouver, Port Moody and Burnaby. The panel subsequently decided to support the municipalities’ posi- tion. F-A-S-T COLLISION REPAIRS CALL THE PROFESSIONALS AT JAYCORMOTIVE 1959 LTD. FREE RENTAL COURTESY CARS B.C.A.A.
