Sunday, September 27, 1998 — North Shore News — 13 Lightning strikes spark blaze in Cap watershed LIGHTNING strikes caused a small forest fire in the Capilano Watershed last week. The fire, less than a hectare in size, was triggered by lightning last Thursday evening. Tt was located in difficult terrain in the watershed’s Hesketh Valley, just north of the Lions. Said Bill Morrell, spokesman for the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s (GVRD) fire protection crew, “The fire crew, assisted by helicopter reconnaissance from the ministry of forests coastal fire centre, used existing road access to the valley to approach the fire, which was a kilometre back into the forest.” He said dircfighters contained the fire and crews worked to combat flare-ups and hot spots. Additional patrols-in the watershed will ensure no other fires are burning as a result of the lightning storm. Morrell said the GVRD uses Environment Canada’s satellite-based Lightning Locator System, as well as ground controls, to spot fires in the watersheds. A network of well-maintained roads in the watersheds allows access to remote areas for firefighting and other watershed manage- ment activities, he said.
