16 — Friday, May 29, 1998 — North Shore News NV City path will cost over $500,000 Jolanda Waskito Contributing Writer THE “most dangerous path” for cyclists — the Low Level Road — may soon become much safer. North Vancouver City staif is working on a detailed plan to build a 1.2- to 1.5-metre- wide (four to five feet) bievcle path on either side of the Low Level Road trom Kennard Ave. to St. Andrews Ave. 1.5 metres is the standard path width but the north bike lane will be narrower around ‘electrical poles, and the sourh lane will be about 30 centime- tres (one foor) less chan that because a minimum separation between the railway tracks and the road is required for safety reasons. For North Vancouver teacher Bev Parslaw, whe par- ticipated in the joint North Vancouver city and district task force on the bicycle plan, the proposed route isn’t perfect but “something is better than nothing.” Parslow said he avoids cycling on the Low Level Road because “it’s the most danger- ous path in Vancouver,” “but would cycle on the route if it were ever built. “It gives cyclists a little bit of safe space,” said Parslow, who is an avid cyclist and has biked through Europe. He added, “Anything that encourages people to cycle safely on the North Shore is the way to go.” Coun. Darrell Mussatto agrees, “If we want to promote cycling as an alternative mode of transportation, I think this is a very good route,” Mussatto said. “I"m supporting it.” He said the Low Level route “makes sense” because it’s flat and easier io cycle than the Third Street hill. “T think it’s a prevty major thoroughway and it will become more active if it gets built,” said Mussarto, who sometimes cycles to work. He added, *I just want to make sure ... is that the best See Previous page 18 NORTH Vancouver City councillor and bicycle enthusiast Darrell Mussatto supports the use of a bicycle route beside the Low Level road along the city’s watertront.
