Dear Editor:

My observations concerning the demands made by aborigi-
nal people have raised the following questions for me: :

Should we give Canadians special rights according to when
their ancestors arrived here?

Should we give anyone title to land because their ancestors
trekked across it once or twice a year to go hunting or to attack
their neighbors? ; :

Should we accept hearsay evidence passed through perhaps
20 generations, as conclusive proof (as the Supreme Court of,
Canada suggests) of the ownership of British Columbia land? -
(Everyone knows how.a story once told as it passes from teller
to teller changes to the point where one would not recognize
the original tale.) oo .

Should three or 12 or any group of individuals be seriously °
considered te represent a nation? : So,

] suggest the answer to these questions is, “No.” We all ~
apparently came irom some place else. | don’t know of any-
where else in the world where land rights, may be awarded on
such a flimsy premise as the recent Supreme Court ruling
regarding the acceptance of self-serving tales from aboriginals as
evidence, , : oo

As Canadians we should assist any group of citizens needing
help in coping with today’s world; however, surely no one can
expect to go back and live as their ancestors did 200 years ago. —

- The sooner everybody} in Cariada accepts that they have
equal and rot special rights and responsibilitics, the sooner ou
individual and provincial problems will disappear. :
