The students produced their video during a six-
day course they and other Collingwood students
attended at Gulf Islands Film and Televisi
Scheol on Galiano Island last April.

School administrator Dave Clothier

“Tt was amazing. They took on films trom
around the world ... and they won,” said Clothier.

The Vancouver Opera is hoping to attract a younger audience this Christmas

Next week, a quartet of young singers will interpret Grimm’s fairy tale Hansel
and Gretel in six performances at the Vancouver East Cultural Cent:

The opera company has edited Engelbert Humperdinck’s three-act opera down
to a mirthful 45 minutes. Colorful costumes, whimsical sets and a cross-dressing
tenor (Marcel van Neer plays the nasty witch) should catch a child’s attention.
Opera publicist Doug Tuck says beautiful singing and the fact that “everybody likes
to see their kids delighted,” should captivate ‘the adults in attendance. a
soprano Mariatcresa Magisano is Hanscl, Monica Huisman is Gretel and Taras
Kalish double-times as Father and the Sandman.

Following next week’s performances, the company takes the show on the road
to 120 schools and public theatres throughout B.C. including a handful of North
Shore schools in late January, carly February.
