Matsubara will be speaking in North Vancouver on Nov. 4 at. the - Canadian International College. Matsubara, 65, was born in Hiroshima. On Aug. 6, 1945, at age ~ 12, she was exposed-to the American A-bomb, 1.5 kilo- metres away from ground zero. Matsubara was working with other students mobilized - to demolish wooden houses for fire prevention. * In 1953 she endured 12 plastic eres over a peri of seven Tronths on net face, . fingers and arm. © In 1962 she was chosen as - ‘one of the members for the -: First World Peace’ Pilgrimage to appeal for a ban on nuclear testings. - Matsubara made a_five- month trip to 14 countries. - . Of 250 classmates on the job, only 50 oe survived Ss : On the morning of Aug. 6, ~ the air-raid ‘alarm sounded at ' 7:09 a.m... and then cleared. . > Matsubara and her classmates dismantled the wooden hous- es. . . ¢ They.were in a city of ~~ 350,000. ‘ ¥ They heard the sound of a B-29. Matsubara saw the bomb fall. There was a flash and a roar. She instinctively fay flat on the ground. Her first thought was that the plane had aimed its load directly at her. She lost consciousness. What had been a blue sky morning had turned to what seemed fike night. There was a dense mist everywhere. Her friend Takiko, who had been standing next to her before the blast, had vanished. Matsubara got on her feet and saw that her hands were badly burned, swollen ta three times the size they once were. Most of her blue clothes were gone. Her white underwear, which had reflected the light of the blast, remained... The flesh on her face, hands and legs was burned. Skin peeled off and hung in shreds. She was bleeding and in terror. © She ran to the river and jumped in to cool the heat of her body. The river was full of people, crying and shouting. There was silence from the dead, washed away in the water. When she recounts her experience of the atomic bomb to the thousands of Japanese elementary, junior and senior high school and university students who visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum every year, she also tells them about Japan’s war crimes in Asia. She pledges to continue to share her experi- ence and talk about how meaningless war is and how precious life is.
