SOMETIMES we mon- ters and extremists get R wry laugh out of the oles the politically orrect dig for them- elves, And the NDP’s ew helmet law pro- ides a such a laugh. Everyone riding a bike ust wear a helmet, they say. But they forgot their buddies the Sikhs, I have little doubt, ough, that in the very near ture Glen Clark or some- hody will be on the tube splaining that while laws are for everyone, some laws are different from others. Or aybe Uijal Dosanjh will do j -Remeraber the fuss when those Royal Canadian Legion anches' said their rule was at no headgear could be yorn in the buildings? The yhole NDP gang were jump- ig up and down yakking bout “human rights.” Right lacross the country, the media ranted on about “racism.” The NDP are now hoist- with their own petard, meaning they are being blown up by their own bomb. All the usual myths are being paraded. On the box and in the papers much is being made — again —of how the Sikhs fought on our side in the last war. Many did. And bravely, One or two even won the Victoria Cross. But many didn’t. Thousands went over to Hitler and Tojo. Ronald Searle, the famous British cartoonist, has described how, out of 65,000 Indian Army troops captured at Singapore, “25,000 accepted the glad tidings that the Japanese loved them and needed them to drive out a common LEXWOO Peston § you the best sleep of \ i your life. And one of the drawings he made at the risk of his life was of @ British officer kneeling down, about to be beaten by a Sikh g guard whom the officer had failed to salute. Books have been written about Sikhs captured in North Africa who went over to the Germans and Italians. Some even joined the Waffen SS. One such book was Foreign Legions of the Third Reich, by David Littlejohn. A Calcutta lawyer by the name of Subhas Chandra Rose erganized three divi- sions of Sikhs to fight for the Japanese in Burma. How many enemy-friend- ly Sikhs ended up in Canada shouting for human rights, | wonder? We'll never know. But there must be some. We're nothing if not suckers. The second myth, accord- ing to several Sikh sources, at any rate, is that the turban is a religious symbol. So “don’t interte ere with our religion,” they say. Anne Ruttan, born in India, has written extensively Individually custom Winter Jackets infant boy and girls Sizes 12 to 30mos. Suggest retail $70° _BABY SALE ~ about it. She says there are five Sikh religious symbols including the kirpan, or dag- ger, and Jong hair. But the turban is not one of them. The purpose of the tur- ban, which originated in Turkey, was to keep unshorn hair tidy. | wouldn’t know. But enough Sikhs dispute the religious significance of what she calls “the dubious tur- ban” that the matter is moot. And lots of Sikhs don’t both- er with such headgear. Back at the NDP ranch, worried discussions must be taking place. Think of all those votes, there now being 160,000 Sikhs in what used to be known as British Columbia. Two years ago they gave the Sikhs a million bucks to set up a Community Centre in Vancouver that would “play an important part in the preservation of Sikh culture.” The preservation of the traditional Canadian culture is tess important. Can any opposition be expected from the Liberals? Don’t be silly. They admit they have no policy on this matter. No onc wants to stand on principle and be called a racist.
