about Sikhs captured in
North Africa who went over
to the Germans and Italians.
Some even joined the Waffen

Foreign Legions of the Third
Reich, by David Littlejohn.

A Calcutta lawyer by the
name of Subhas Chandra
Rose erganized three divi-
sions of Sikhs to fight for the
Japanese in Burma.

How many enemy-friend-
ly Sikhs ended up in Canada
shouting for human rights, |
wonder? We'll never know.
But there must be some.
We're nothing if not suckers.

The second myth, accord-
ing to several Sikh sources, at
any rate, is that the turban is
a religious symbol. So “don’t
interte ere with our religion,”
they say.

five Sikh religious symbols
including the kirpan, or dag-
ger, and Jong hair. But the
turban is not one of them.

The purpose of the tur-
ban, which originated in
Turkey, was to keep unshorn
hair tidy. | wouldn’t know.
But enough Sikhs dispute the
religious significance of what
she calls “the dubious tur-
ban” that the matter is moot.
And lots of Sikhs don’t both-
er with such headgear.

Back at the NDP ranch,
worried discussions must be
taking place. Think of all
those votes, there now being
160,000 Sikhs in what used
to be known as British
Columbia.
