Its 2am... the diagnosis
is frightening. The 40 mph
projectile hit the temple. frac-
tured the skull and induced a
coma, A CAT scan reveals a
severed artery, clotting and
severe hemorrhaging. The
patient is in critical condition
and emergency stirgery ts eru-
cial... impending death bya
baseball.

This story is true and
alarmingly common, If only
he had been wearing a helaet!
(Note the past tense) Its a
familiar and tuo oftea after-
the-fact observation, Injuries
in sports are not only com-
mon, come are acceptable sou-
venirs of a game well played
and played hard. [nm beer
league ball, players of varying
skill tevel add to the risk of
accidents, Bats and balls
become dangerous and deadly
weapons. Injuries range from
bruises to fractures, brain
damage and death. This is
unacceptable and with protec-
tive headgeur preventable.

This hits home because the
person in the story is my
brother. The prognosis for
Geoff’s quality of life is
miraculously good, bur the
quality of safety in beer league
ball is not. until all leagues
play it safe.

The message is: Wear pro-
tective headgear or the next
time you're out at first it could
be your fast.

Back to school and safer driving

Dear Editor:

As it’s only a matter of time beforg school is
in full session, | would like tu raise some con-
verns ctbout the inattention and: inconsideration
of drivers tawards pedestrians.

Walking to and from work, get hit by a car
ait least once every couple of weeks. Luckily, 10s
not very serious as ifs usually by cars turning
rivht onto a busy street after traffic coming from
their lett bas cleared. They forget to check for
pedestriaus crossing the road in front of theo,

avceplable just to walk ina crosswidk as drivers
impatiently inch towards you pressuring you to
quicken your pace,

Why is it that normally easy-going, sensible
individuals become so aggressive behind the
wheel?
