ON THE OTHER HAND SHORTLY BEFORE the Queen and Prince Philip arrived in B.C. the Vancouver Idiot delivered some breathtaking news on its front page. Yes, the Swit was going to run excerpts from some trashy book. We would learn all about the royal love affairs. Especially Philip's. “Royal shocker dethrones myth of Queen's mar- riage,” said the leering headline. We hardly had time to catch our breath, though, than there was more news, The royal shocker had been delayed. We would get it later in the summer, No reason was given for this stalled offensive. And none has been given since. But two wecks later there was a weaselling piece by the Sun's Wimp-in-Chief, lan Haysom, who unctuously declared that the series would be left to the supermarket tabs. 1457 Lonsdale Ave., N. Vancouver Phone: 980-2451 Wednesday, August 31, 1994 - North Shore News - 7 Sneaky republicans peddle royal trash Doug Collins He gave the impression that the decision had been nade after he got a letter from author Barry Broadfoot, an old Sun reporter and author who took a dim view of royal shockers, 1 doubt that Broadfoot was the cause. My guess is that the public also took a dim view of what Broadfoot called “scummy Fleet Street gossip.” It is also possible that someone like Conrad Black told the Sun not to make a bloody fool of itself. The issue here is not “censor- ship.” And I don’t care how much of a fool the Si makes of itself. [t does that all the time. For all I care it could run 50 scummy pieces. More for the trash can. What {am concerned about is openness. The Sun has gone republi- can, you see, but doesn’t have the spine to say so. There is no doubt that there is a trend toward republicanism. The largest newspaper in English Canada is The Toronto Star and it has preached republicanism ever since the Hondriches grabbed con- 66 Canada is collapsing and I don’t just mean that Quebec wants out, 99 trol of the paper many years ago. The Globe & Mail, Canada’s “national newspaper” has followed suit. Partly, that is. Hence the editor- in! headline “Elizabeth the Last,” meaning that when she dies the Cariadian monarchy should die with her, OK. So we know where it stands. The reasons for this trend are not - hard to find. Canada is cotlapsing, and I don't just mean that Quebec wants out. | mean that we have become a wandering tribe that has Jost its sense of direction. The values on which the country was built have also collapsed. The Woodstock syndrome is supreme. Aliens pour into the country for whom Canadian history and tradi- tions are either a joke or a mystery. Organized, of course, by anti-Anglo Ottawa. In the universities, anarchy, con- fusion and leftist intolerance are King, and looney feminists and homos are Queen. Tradition is racism. Patriotism is treason. Link Byfield had it right. Commenting on Remembrance Day, he wrote in B.C. Report magazine that “present-day Canadians no longer believe in self-sacrifice, they believe in self-satisfaction.” In Maclean's, Barbara Amiel asked, “What sort of place is it where doctors who run impersonal mass abortion clinics are idolized, while citizens who smoke in a pub- lic place or watch a pretty girl are charged with crimes?" In spite of all this madness, there is resistance to the rot. Decency may be dying but is not yet dead. And it was the rem- nants of decency out there in the public that obliged the Suan to back away from its “revela- tions.” Which brings me to ask why the Su isn't honest with itself. If it wants to be republican why doesn't it come out and say sa? Instead, it beats around the bush: “Wilh the monarchy fast becom- ing, more irrelevant even in Britain, can Canada be far behind?” (Sun editorial, May 3, 1993) There has also been a spate of anti-monarchy write-ups, like the feature headed “B.C. is Canada's top spender on royal reps.” Itis true that we spend more than other provinces on Government House and the Lt. Governor (about $2 million), But that is still less Uhan the NDP wastes on paper clips. Then there was the piece by Rerbara Yappy under the headline “God save (us from) our gracious Queen.” All of which is OK in the scrum of public discussion — provided it isn’t sneaked into the parade under the false banner of neutrality or pro- monarchy. To repeat: the Sun is not official- ly republican because it fears there are still too many people out there KEN BAXTER LAWYER 24 Years Experience who know up from down, Which is more than one can say for Haysom. In his retreat from the scandal book he stated that the paper would give the Queen respect but not rev- erence. According to Roget's Thesaurus, Tespect is a synonym for reverence. But E don’t expect the Sit to respect or revere the nonarchy. That's the way it is with wander- ing tribes. They are too primitive. They pay homage to chiefs and shamans.
