While all blood groups are always needed and are equally important, the Ked Cross has had an increasingly difficult time try- ing to keep adequate levels of group O blood in its inventory. More recently, the group O blood inventory has remained at low levels (Jess than a three-day suppl). Why the need for 0’s? “Group O is the universal blood group,” said Len Lifchus, Director of blood donor recruitment:for the Red Cross. “In an emergency silu- ation when a person tequires a transfusion, O negative blood can be. received by everyone while O | -positive blood can be received by” all Rh positive individuals. Hospitals keep higher inventory levels of group O blood to use if another blood group has been tem- porarily depleted because of unex- pected high usage. The universality- of this blood group, combined with the fact that-the O negative blood type is only found in 7% of the population, accounts for why group O blood is constantly in demand.” There will be a North Shore blood donor clinic on Friday, Apri 29, at the Capilano Mall from 2 to 8 p.m. Donors may donate every 70 days; however, as of May I donors will be eligible to donate every 56 days. All donors are required to produce identification and are - reminded to eat a substantial meal one to four hours prior to donating. For more information on donor clinics, please call 877-7810.
